Monkleigh House, Devon A good reason to stay in Devon

What Monkleigh House can offer you

Solitude, privacy, room, scope, excitement, happiness, whether your just a few friends looking for a place to get away from the rat race, a couple who would like somewhere special to hold a wedding, a family who need a home to stay in whilst exploring the countryside, a writer who needs somewhere to get rid of the writers block, an artist looking for inspiration, a birthday party weekend, Halloween, Easter, whenever, whatever your reason then Monkleigh House is the place for you.

The Surrounding Areas

You will find Monkleigh House situated on the outskirts of the small village of Monkleigh between the attractive towns of Torrington and Bideford. Both Town offers all amenities including banks, post offices as well as pubs, clubs and other forms of entertainments.

Barnstaple is also within easy reach and this is where the local rail station is, with trains from Exeter on a regular basis. You can also arrive by turning off the M5 at junction 27, head for Bideford, through the 'White Town' as it has been called, then follow the historical River Torridge, along the A388 until you reach Monkleigh.

Exeter and Bristol International Airports are both within approximately 1 to 2 hours travelling distance respectively.

The beautiful countryside surrounding Monkleigh includes the Torridge Valley just to the east as well as other numerous wooded valleys, which are a carpet of blue in spring as blue bells take over the woodland floors, and rolling hills, indicative of Devon with its red soil. There are miles of delightful walks as well as good riding and fishing and boating can be enjoyed on the Taw and Torridge.

The beaches of Appledore, Instow and Westward Ho! are all within easy reach and have sands that have, over time, become the bases of many a child's sandcastle, being fine and golden. For the more adventurous there is surfing at renowned beaches such as Croyde, Saunton Sands and Woolacombe.

And for those who like a little seafaring adventure there are regular boats over to the Island of Lundy.

Monkleigh House

The house was built in 1808 by Lord Saltrens and retains a wealth of period features such as the 'dog-leg' staircase, original fireplaces, shutters and a gilded plaster pelmet in the dining room. The gardens, which guests are welcome to use, contain many unusual trees and shrubs.

It was once a rectory and is described as elegant and beautiful and being Georgian and compromising the major part of a Grade II Listed building, when you come to stay here, you will feel as though you have been transported back in time.

Walking through the entrance vestibule into the large reception hall, you will feel as though you are in a different world as the calmness and quietness of the countryside seeps through your pores. Relax in the sitting room or if you are a large group, then the drawing room comes into its own. The dining room is light and airy and just sheer elegance in this modern world of fast food and a life of convenience.

Or why not hire the house for photo shoots or filming? With the decor being based on the period of the time, it will enhance any costumes or designer wear that will be worn during the time of the shoot.

This is where i will put the costings and dates that refer to them.

And there is more!

Also downstairs of this historical house is a fully fitted Kitchen/living room and a utility room.

Upstairs there are 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and 2 shower rooms, and tucked away is a small study area for those who have to bring the office with them. The bedrooms are spacious and all have views across the countryside that is second to none.

The gardens are landscaped so you get a feeling of what it must have been like to have lived here back in the days of the entry with armies of servants and gardeners.

In the gardens there is a timber garden house, which can be used as a studio for those who might like to soak up the atmosphere whilst filling in their diaries.
